Personal Development Reads

One thing I'm really focusing on right now is personal development. When I was managing in corporate, I read a lot of management books (makes sense right), but now that I work for myself, I'm shifting my reads to focus more on self-development, especially from a health and fitness and entrepreneurial perspective (big things are in the works here... stay tuned).

I've read some really wonderful books over the past few months and have several others on my radar that I wanted to share and hopefully they inspire you as much as they have inspired me! Some are personal development (getting your shit together), some are yoga-based (my 200YTT exposed me to some AMAZING books and allowed me to check out some others), and some are entrepreneurial based (how to build your own business and say F the haters). Whatever you're looking for, I hope you enjoy!

Favorite reads to date:

Girl Code - This book, by Cara Alwill Leyba, is simply GOLD for a female entrepreneur! Founder of "The Champagne Diet," Cara is so candid and real about her journey, including her struggles of self-doubt. She offers real advice on how to overcome adversity when just starting out with your own business, and how to keep pushing even when it seems impossible. A must read for all bosses!

You Are a Badass - This one made the rounds about a year ago, but it's still one of the best personal development books I've ever read. It's less "girl boss" focused, and more about just living your best life. There are a lot of practical tips and tricks for pushing aside self-doubt, surrounding yourself with positivity, taking scary leaps for something you want, and all things in between!

Mastering Your Mean Girl - You know that little voice inside your head that loves to pop up when things are going really well and say "this won't last, you're going to mess this up"? Well this book is all about believing in yourself and silencing that inner voice for good. It's a quick read (I read it in a day on vacation) but wonderfully written. And the author, Melissa Ambrosini, will literally make you want to be her best friend. She's real, down to Earth, and you can feel her kindness pop off of the page.

Daring Greatly - Brené Brown is one of my absolute favorites, and this book does not disappoint. In it she tackles the notion of being vulnerable, and how it can completely change your life. She backs up her claims with years of research into vulnerability and emotions such as courage and fear (the stories from focus groups will leave you speechless). This book is amazing for someone struggling with putting themselves out there and taking risks, whether that risk is saying hi to a neighbor or speaking to a crowd of thousands at a conference!

The Yamas and Niyamas - Going through my 200YTT was an amazing experience and it opened my eyes to the fact that yoga is SO much more than just the physical practice (in fact, that's just a teeny tiny part of yoga). This book in particular does an INCREDIBLE job of breaking down the main ethical components of yoga (the Yamas and Niyamas) and allowing the reader to examine their own lives. I especially enjoyed the journal prompts at the end of each chapter which allowed me to really self-study and use what I had learned to apply to my every day life. Whether you're a dedicated yogi or not, this personal development book is one you will surely enjoy, with many practical applications to todays world!

On my current list:

Girl Wash Your Face - This personal development and self-improvement read seems to be at the top of everyone's list right now... and I've heard nothing but amazing things! Can't wait to get my hands on it as it's next on the list!

Wanderlust - From the mastermind behind the "Wanderlust" yoga festivals, this book has great reviews and is essentially a guide to beginning or deepening your own practice, not just physically, but also spiritually and mentally. There are prompts, essays, playlists and beautiful photos throughout!

Yoga and the Path of the Urban Mystic - I'm really itching to start this book, which is all about how we, in 2018, can take the ancient yogic principles that may seem outdated and apply them to modern life. Should be a great read!

The Compound Effect - This is a must read for entrepreneurs and girl bosses, focusing on how one positive change can spiral into a massive shift for the better, not just in your business, but in your life. This book is currently sitting on my shelf just waiting to be read.

Modern Mindfulness - Mindfulness is a word that increasingly gets thrown around. But what exactly does it mean? When you think mindfulness, do you think of sitting in a dark room in silence for hours? This book takes mindfulness and mediation and brings it into the 21st Century, showing you how to practice both in todays busy world, and reap the benefits that they have to offer. Also sitting on my bookshelf awaiting my eyes!

I hope one of these descriptions struck a nerve and inspired you to get reading! Personal development is such an important part of self-study and living your best life, and these books are great for helping you do just that! Feel free to click the link of each title to be directed straight to the book on Amazon (note that this is my personal link and I may receive compensation if you purchase through it!).

Do you have any recommendations for great PD reads that I should check out? Comment below and let me know... I have several flights coming up and am always looking for a way to pass the time that doesn't include over-priced drinks and re-runs of The Office on a tiny screen in front of my face, although let's be real, I could watch The Office all day every day!
